This is NOT good.

What can we do to help them to NOT get it?

This is awful news. I looked it up and it looks like there is nothing we can really do to prevent it, except if we exhibit flu symptoms to limit our contact with them and keep a close eye on them.

I had an email which I forwarded to TMC because it said a cat in Iowa had it.

Looks at her sleepy cute gorgeous boys and hope they don't get it

The cat in Iowa got it from it's human, not the other way around. What's scary, other than worrying about our babies, is that this means the virus is mutating faster than expected. Sad

Copied and pasted here from the email I sent Sally

A cat in Iowa has tested positive for the 2009 H1N1 influenza virus, state officials confirmed this morning, marking the first time a cat has been diagnosed with this strain of influenza.

The cat, which has recovered, is believed to have caught the virus from someone in the household who was sick with H1N1. There are no indications that the cat passed the virus on to any other animals or people.

Prior to this diagnosis, the 2009 H1N1 influenza virus had been found in humans, pigs, birds and ferrets.

To date, H1N1 influenza virus infection of pigs has been reported in Canada, Argentina, Singapore, the United Kingdom (Northern Ireland), Ireland, Norway, the U.S. and Japan. It has also been reported in turkeys in Chile and Canada. Based on the evidence available at this time, the infections were spread from humans to the animals.

Well, you know how stu.pid people can be in a panic like this flu has caused. They've killed thousands of pigs already (which is why they had to change the name of it).

Even though humans are giving it to cats at this time, the first cat to give it to a human and I'm afraid of what will happen.

Summary: "To date, there is no evidence that domestic cats have a role in the natural transmission cycle of H5N1 viruses" and "the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control has issued preliminary recommendations for cat owners living in H5N1-affected areas. These include keeping domestic cats indoors to prevent exposure to potentially infected birds and avoiding contact with semi-domestic and feral cats living outside the home." Report from the CDC
